By understanding the differences between aesthetic needs for botox and medical indications, it can help determine whether or not botox is right for your condition.
Botox indications according to dermatology
Dermatology, Venereology and Aesthetics Specialist Doctor Arini Astasari explained that the indications for needing Botox are divided into two, aesthetic and therapeutic.
“Aesthetic Botox works by temporarily paralyzing muscles, thereby effectively reducing dynamic lines (
dynamic wrinkles
) which appears due to repeated facial expressions,” said Arini when contacted by goldensamoyedIndonesia.com, Tuesday (25/11).
He added that several aesthetic conditions that can generally be treated with Botox namely, forehead wrinkles (
horizontal forehead lines
), glabella lines or vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows,
crow’s feet
in the corner of the eye,
bunny lines
on the nose, and
eyebrow lift
to give the effect of lifting eyebrows that are starting to droop.
Interestingly, aesthetic Botox can also be used as a preventive measure, because its aim is to prevent fine lines from developing into permanent wrinkles (
static wrinkles
) even though the face is relaxed.
“Many of my patients start Botox in their late 20s to mid-30s as a preventive measure,” continues Arini.
A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology supports that preventative use of Botox can slow the formation of permanent wrinkles. However, patients also need to be educated about the risk of resistance if Botox is done too often.
Botox for certain medical conditions
Apart from aesthetics, Botox also has a wide range of medical benefits. This is something that is still less known to the public.
“Botox actually has many medical indications that have been approved by the FDA, such as hyperhidrosis, chronic migraines, etc
blepharospasm
” said Arini.
Some medical conditions that can be treated with Botox include hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating of the armpits, palms or feet.
Then, Botox can be used for chronic migraines, blepharospasm, namely uncontrolled twitching of the eyelids, strabismus or crossed eyes, to
muscle stiffness
in cerebral palsy sufferers.
According to Arini, the effectiveness of Botox for hyperhidrosis and several other conditions is even supported by many studies, including the journal Dermatologic Surgery.
When is Botox best done?
Arini said someone should do Botox when they start to be bothered by expression lines, or have a medical condition that really requires this therapy. However, this action still requires consultation.
“Consultation with a qualified dermatologist is a mandatory step to determine whether botox is the right solution,” he adds.
By understanding the indications for botox both aesthetically and medically, you can make a more informed and safe decision before undergoing this procedure.
