“Many people really know that there is a second heart. The calf is not just a muscle for walking. In the world of cardiology & phlebology, the calf is called a ‘second heart’, a pump that helps flow blood back to the heart, against gravity,” wrote Vito in his Instagram upload.

According to Vito, contracting the calf muscles helps the process of pumping blood from the lower area to the heart. This assistance from the ‘second heart’ is important because when standing, gravitational forces make it difficult for blood to return to the heart.
Vito reminded us of the importance of maintaining calf muscle strength. When the calf muscles are strong, venous return to the heart will be better. This can affect the entire cardiovascular system.
One disease that can be caused by disruption of the pump system in the calves is varicose veins. This condition occurs when there is chronic high pressure in the leg veins.A strong calf pump can reduce this pressure and prevent vein dilation.
There are several signs that the function of the pump system in the calf is disrupted, which can appear at times. These include legs that quickly swell, prominent veins and the appearance of varicose veins.
“Hence, varicose veins are not just a cosmetic problem. Often they are an early warning that your venous circulation, which should carry blood from the legs to the heart, is aging more quickly,” wrote Vito.
Vito suggests always training the second heart pump in this calf. Some of the simplest exercises that can be done include brisk walking for 30 minutes, heel raises/calf raises, and going up and down stairs.
“Everything makes the calf muscles pump stronger, the blood flows more smoothly, the venous pressure drops, and the heart becomes stronger,” he concluded.
