The pigs’ ability to roam was granted to local residents and still plays an important role in the ecology of Hampshire’s forests.
New Forest animal safety campaigner Gilly Jones raised concerns about the dangers posed by tourists trying to get close to the animals.
Jones said he witnessed someone sticking a camera three inches or about 7.6 cm from the sow’s snout (

“When encountering pigs in the New Forest, the public should look but not touch, maintain a respectful distance and avoid any form of interaction with them,” the Chief said
New Forest Commoners Defense Association
, Andrew Parry-Norton, as reported
The Independent
.
“These animals play a very important role in the forest, clearing acorns which can be toxic to other livestock such as ponies and cattle if consumed in large quantities. It is therefore important that these pigs are allowed to carry out their duties without interference,” he added.
Parry-Norton urged people to take photos from a distance and use the zoom feature rather than approaching the pigs directly.
He also added other important safety advice such as that dogs should be leashed, as mother pigs can act defensively to protect their young.
In addition, drivers around the New Forest should also be careful and give themselves plenty of space.
“We appreciate that people want to come and see the pigs during the pannage season, but we ask them to be respectful of the pigs, and all other livestock in the Forest, when doing so,” he concluded.
