Government
United States
(US) under President Donald Trump announced a controversial new proposal. The proposal would require some visitors to the US to submit their social media history from the last five years as part of the entry permit process.
The proposal, posted in the Federal Register by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), suggests that travelers from countries included in the visa-waiver program or
visa waiver program
provide additional personal information as part of their electronic application.
These requirements will apply to travelers using the Electronic Travel Authorization System (ESTA).ESTA is an online application used by citizens of 42 countries, including the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Israel, Qatar, as well as many other European countries, to travel to the US in less than 90 days without a visa.

Currently, visitors to the US are only required to fill in basic information such as passport, date of birth and past criminal record.
Becoming Mandatory and Requesting Family Data
The proposed changes to the visa waiver application include:
– Makes providing social media history mandatory (

).
– Added “high value data elements” (

– Request the names and dates of birth of immediate family members, along with their place of birth, residence, and telephone numbers for the previous five years.
In 2016, questions about social media information were initially added to the ESTA application, but the section was marked as “optional.”
“If the applicant does not answer the questions or does not have a social media account, an ESTA application can still be submitted without negative interpretation or presumption,” said a statement on the CBP website currently, as reported

The new proposal, which is open for public comment until Feb. 9, would make the information mandatory.

has contacted the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) which oversees CBP for comment regarding the impact of implementing this mandatory policy.
The changes are in line with a broader push by President Donald Trump’s administration to overhaul the country’s legal immigration system, in addition to implementing a long-promised mass deportation program for illegal immigrants.
Over the past 11 months, the Trump administration has made sweeping changes to nearly every aspect of the immigration process, tightening every form of entry into the United States, both legal and illegal.
The government is also placing strict emphasis and monitoring on the social media accounts of people who are in the US on student visas.
Last June, the US State Department instructed embassies and consulates that they could scrutinize student visa applicants for “hostile attitudes toward our citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles.”
According to the guidelines, applicants are asked to set their social media profiles to public. In fact, a lack of social media presence can be seen as a negative thing that can be taken into consideration in the visa application process.
