He also said he had communicated with the Indonesian Minister of Culture Fadli Zon regarding the demolition plan.
According to Mahyeldi, Fadli agreed to prioritize repairing or strengthening the Dutch heritage building.
“As for strengthening, why do we have to dismantle the World Heritage bridge,” he said.
Mahyeldi then asked related parties, especially the Padang Class II Railway Engineering Center, to make a comprehensive study before deciding to tear down the bridge.
Responding to the plan to dismantle this railway bridge, the Directorate General for the Protection of Culture and Tradition, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia sent a letter to the Padang Class II Railway Engineering Center.
The letter contains three important points.First, the Cultural Heritage structure of the Sawahlunto-Teluk Bayur (Emmahaven) Railway has been designated as a Cultural Heritage through the Decree of the Governor of West Sumatra Number 432-144-2019 concerning the Designation of Batu Tabal Station, Padang Panjang Station.
Kayu Tanam Station, Silo Gunung coal storage as a cultural heritage building and high bridge, Sawahlunto-Teluk Bayur railway line as a cultural heritage structure. This structure is part of the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto which has been designated as World Cultural Heritage.
“Based on this, all forms of changes made to cultural heritage require requirements in the form of feasibility studies and technical studies, as well as careful planning,” reads part of the Ministry of Education and Culture’s letter.
Second, the study will soon be carried out by the Ministry of Culture. If the study finds other methods (such as structural consolidation) to maintain the sustainability of the structure, action will be taken in accordance with the recommendations of the study in question.
The study will be carried out until the end of December 2025. The Region III Cultural Preservation Center will also immediately coordinate with related parties to carry out the study.
“The Ministry of Culture requested a postponement of the demolition until the feasibility study on the cultural heritage structure is completed while still paying attention to public safety. Temporary strengthening is necessary,” they continued.
The plan to dismantle the railway bridge in the Anai Valley is thought to be due to the impact of floods and landslides in the area.
