Rediscovery of plants
Rafflesia Hasseltii
in the Forest region of West Sumatra has attracted the attention of the world public.
However, in the midst of the international spotlight, Special Presidential Envoy for Tourism (UKP Tourism) Zita Anjani emphasized that Indonesian scientists have a key role in discovering, mapping and researching this rare flower. Not just foreign institutions like Oxford or other international partners.
Rafflesia itself is a giant parasitic flower that is very difficult to find, because it has no stems and leaves, lives limited to certain habitats, and only blooms in a matter of days.

Therefore, ecological knowledge and the expertise of local scientists are the main factors that allow the discovery of this plant to occur again.
According to Zita Anjani, local researchers such as Iswandi, Joko Witono, and Septi Andriki have been mapping for years, pioneering remote forest trails, working with indigenous communities, and maintaining scientific records regarding the Rafflesia habitat.
“The public must know that without them, global research would not be possible,” he said.
UKP Tourism emphasizes that Indonesia remains open to international collaboration, but the contribution of local scientists must be recognized equally so that research collaboration runs fairly, has integrity and provides real benefits for the conservation and development of science-based sustainable tourism.
“Global collaboration is important. But local knowledge must be valued equally. Without Indonesian scientists, Rafflesia would not have been discovered,” said Zita Anjani.
Zita emphasized that recognition of local scientists is not just a matter of individual appreciation, but part of the development of national policies in the conservation and sustainable tourism sectors.
“Conservation is not just about protecting flowers or forests. It is also about maintaining the dignity of the nation’s science. If Indonesian scientists do not get an equal place, then science-based tourism strategies will lose their footing,” he said.
This rediscovery not only opens up further research opportunities, but also strengthens Indonesia’s position as the center of world biodiversity, led by Indonesian scientists.
