A tourist from Australia, Duncan McNaught, suddenly went viral after uploading a video praising beauty
India
and strongly criticized the way social media has unfairly portrayed the country.
Duncan, who recently visited Meghalaya, a state in northeastern India, called the region a “hidden paradise” that is far from the negative stereotypes that often circulate on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
“It’s very sad to see how badly social media has hurt India’s image. Even though this is such a beautiful country. Look at this place, Nongjrong, the valley above the clouds, truly extraordinary,” wrote Duncan on Instagram, as quoted

According to him, viral content about India often only highlights slums, street food that is considered “dirty”, or poor sanitation conditions, even though that is only a small part of reality.
“There are so many beautiful places here, but social media only shows slums and street food which is said to be disgusting. Seriously? Look at this, one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen in my life,” he stressed, showing the expanse of Meghalaya’s green hills shrouded in mist.
Duncan’s video immediately received thousands of agreeing comments from internet users, especially Indian netizens who had been annoyed with the uniform narrative from foreign tourists.
“Welcome to Northeast India, bro! This is just the beginning,” wrote one netizen.
“Meghalaya is indeed the most beautiful state in the entire northeast,” said another.
Many have also highlighted the habit of foreign tourists only visiting big cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, or the classic north-south route, without ever glancing at the “real India” in the northeast.
