This historic pocket watch attracts the attention of collectors, especially because its owner was an important figure of his time. The auction held by Henry Aldridge and Son last Saturday was fierce until finally the watch was sold at a fantastic price.
“A pocket watch is a very personal item. Each passenger has a story that lives on 113 years later through the objects they left behind,” said Managing Director of Henry Aldridge and Son, Andrew Aldridge, quoted by Fox News.
Aldridge added that the remains of victims of major tragedies make their stories continue to be remembered throughout time, including the Titanic tragedy which was one of the most heartbreaking events of the 20th century.
This Jules Jurgensen brand pocket watch made from 18 carat gold also has deep emotional value. This clock was a birthday gift from Ida to her husband in 1888.
Ironically, when the ship sank, Ida refused to board the lifeboat. He chose to stay with Isidor until the end.
“My place is with you. I have lived with you. I love you, and if necessary I will die with you,” were Ida’s words which have been told by many sources.
This couple’s eternal love story was also immortalized in James Cameron’s Oscar-winning film, Titanic, through the iconic scene showing them holding hands on a cabin bed.
The clock stopped ticking at 02.20, April 15, 1912, the time when the Titanic sank completely. The pocket watch was found with Straus’ body and later returned to his family.
The sale of Straus’ watch broke the record for Titanic memorabilia. The previous year, another pocket watch was also sold at the same auction house for US$1.3 million or around Rp. 32 billion.
“Some of the prices seen at this sale demonstrate the continued appeal of this extraordinary story,” said Aldridge.
