Causes of yellow eyes
Reporting from the Brimhall Eye Center page, yellow eyes are caused by an accumulation of bilirubin in the body.Bilirubin itself is a remnant of the process of breaking down red blood cells to produce hemoglobin.
The liver will produce bile to remove bilirubin from the body through the large intestine and excreted from the body through feces.Problems with this organ will cause bilirubin to accumulate in the body, one of which is indicated by yellow eyes.
The following are eight medical conditions with yellow eye symptoms that can be used as a reference.
1. Viral hepatitis
Hepatitis is a virus that can cause inflammation or damage to the liver, thereby inhibiting the liver from processing bilirubin. This virus can be transmitted through water, food, or body fluids from someone who has been contaminated.
Initial symptoms are characterized by fatigue, itching, nausea, fever, and yellow eyes and skin.If not treated properly, the hepatitis virus can cause cirrhosis and even cancer
2. Cirrhosis
Liver cirrhosis is a condition where the liver experiences scar tissue accompanied by hardening. This condition results in the liver not being able to work optimally to remove bilirubin from the body.
Liver damage is caused by excessive alcohol consumption, hepatitis viruses, and accumulation of fat in the liver.
Apart from yellow eyes, the usual symptoms of cirrhosis are feeling tired quickly, no appetite, drastic weight loss, stomach pain, itching, and easy bruising.
3. Sarcoidosis
Sarcoidosis is a condition where immune cells in various organs of the body, such as the lungs and lymph nodes, accumulate to form granulomas or small lumps.
Apart from the lungs and lymph nodes, in some cases, granulomas can also affect the conjunctiva of the patient’s eyes.
Not only yellow eyes, sufferers can also experience eye inflammation which can result in permanent blindness if they do not receive adequate treatment.
4. Anemia
The next cause of yellow eyes is anemia.Anemia occurs because the body cannot produce sufficient numbers of red blood cells.
In general, anemia sufferers will experience symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, paleness and yellow eyes.
Anemia can be caused by chronic inflammation, cancer, iron deficiency, spinal cord disorders, and chronic diseases.
5. Rupture of blood vessels in the eye
Eye blood vessel rupture is a condition that occurs due to the rupture of small blood vessels that spread to the area under the conjunctiva.Rupture of these blood vessels will cause red or pink spots to appear on the sclera.
These ruptured blood cells eventually turn yellow.
6. Blocked bile ducts
Blocked bile ducts will cause bilirubin to accumulate in the bloodstream, which causes yellow eyes.Under normal conditions, bile will flow through the bile ducts and be continued to the small intestine to help the digestive process.
When the bile ducts are blocked, bile fluid will only accumulate in the bloodstream and in the liver, causing the eyes to turn yellow.
Blockage of the bile ducts can be caused by tumors, gallstones, cysts, or hepatitis virus infection.
7. Taking excessive medication
The behavior of taking certain drugs such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin over a long period of time is also known to cause the eyes to turn yellow.
8. Pancreatic cancer
The last cause of yellow eyes is pancreatic cancer. In fact, jaundice is one of the early signs of pancreatic cancer. This blockage by cancer causes bile to accumulate in the blood.
Apart from yellow eyes, other symptoms that arise due to pancreatic cancer include stomach pain, drastic weight loss, and feeling tired easily.
Those are the eight causes of yellow eyes that you must be aware of.If you find symptoms of yellow eyes, immediately go to the doctor to get further treatment.
