Vacation
Now going abroad is not just traveling, but actually “hunting” for experiences that cannot be obtained at all in Indonesia.
Starting from tasting authentic culinary delights, enjoying the snowy winter, to witnessing the aurora borealis, a sensation that is clearly absent in tropical countries like Indonesia.
Even though data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) as of September 2025 still places Malaysia as the number one destination for Indonesian tourists, the latest trends show a significant shift.

Indonesian tourists are now looking more at Asian countries that offer extreme weather and popular pop culture, such as Japan, South Korea and Singapore.
“Indonesian people’s interest in vacationing abroad is still very high. What has changed is their pattern: now they are pursuing unique and thematic experiences that do not exist in the country, especially snow, aurora and pop culture which is currently viral,” said Vice President of Amethyst Group, Handi Pratama, as reported

According to Handi, the top three currently targeted destinations include,
– Japan – the main magnet remains cherry blossoms, thick snow in Hokkaido, and the world of anime and manga which makes fans of the country willing to queue for visas.
– South Korea – K-Pop, Korean dramas, first snow on Nami Island, plus street food and skincare hunting make a deadly combination.
– Singapore – remains a family choice because of the short distance, visa on arrival or visa-free, as well as child-friendly destinations such as Universal Studios and Gardens by the Bay.
“The factor of ease of access and the visa process is still the main consideration. That’s why Japan, Korea and Singapore always occupy the top position,” said Handi.
Uniquely, in the increasingly sophisticated era of artificial intelligence (AI), Indonesian tourists no longer bother making their own itineraries. Many use AI such as ChatGPT, Grok, or special travel applications to plan detailed trips in a matter of minutes.
“AI really helps people make realistic travel plans. Plus the intensive promos for plane tickets and hotels, people become more confident about booking straight away,” he explained.
This trend shows one thing: Indonesian tourists have moved up in class. It’s no longer just about taking photos at hit spots, but really wanting to “feel” something different, whether it’s walking through the first snow, watching a K-Pop idol concert live, or just feeling the cold autumn that never exists in our country.
So, if at the end of this year you are still confused about where to go, maybe it’s time to check your balance and passport, snow in Japan or Korea is waiting.
