Ramen
, a Japanese noodle soup dish that has become world famous, turns out to have serious health risks if consumed too often.
A recent study linked high frequency of eating ramen to an increased chance of premature death, especially in men under the age of 70.
Study published in

This involved more than 6,500 participants aged around 40 years in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.

Participants were grouped based on how often they consumed ramen, ranging from less than once a month to more than three times a week.
High salt sauce is the main factor
During the 4.5 year observation period, 145 deaths were recorded among participants, with 100 of them due to cancer and 29 due to heart disease.
The results showed that the group that consumed ramen the most, especially those who drank more than half their servings of soup, had a higher risk of death.
The researchers highlighted the very high salt content in ramen soup as the main factor that triggers this risk.
“Ramen and its soup contain high levels of salt. Excessive consumption can increase the risk of salt-related diseases, such as stroke and stomach cancer,” reads the research report, as quoted from
Daily Mail
, (26/09).
This risk multiplies when combined with the habit of drinking alcohol.Men who consumed ramen more than three times a week while drinking alcohol were noted to have up to three times the risk of death compared to those who rarely consumed both.
Although these findings provide a stark warning, the researchers acknowledge the limitations of the data, as it was collected through self-reported food records (
self-reported
).
It is susceptible to inaccuracies, such as inaccurate portion size estimates, the type of ramen consumed, or other lifestyle factors such as exercise and chronic medical conditions.
Nevertheless, these findings are enough to trigger recommendations from health experts:
1. Consume Ramen Occasionally: Ramen should be enjoyed as an occasional meal, not as a daily routine.
2. Limit the soup: When consuming ramen, congregants are advised to avoid drinking all the soup which is rich in salt.
3. Avoid Alcohol: It is highly recommended not to consume ramen together with alcohol, especially for men.
The World Health Organization (WHO) itself has long warned of the dangers of consuming excess salt, which is the main cause of hypertension (high blood pressure).Hypertension increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, two deadly diseases that often come without initial symptoms.
WHO recommends that the maximum daily salt consumption limit is 5 grams per person. Thus, although the deliciousness of ramen is very tempting, limiting the frequency of consumption and soup is an important step to maintain long-term health.
