Every November 10, the Indonesian nation remembers the services of the heroes who died defending their homeland.On this date, Indonesian people commemorate it as
Heroes Day
.
Heroes’ Day not only honors the sacrifices of heroes, but also reminds them of their fighting spirit, courage and sincerity for Indonesia’s independence.
The events of the Battle of Surabaya in 1945 were the forerunner to November 10 being immortalized as Heroes’ Day.To commemorate the heroic spirit of the Indonesian people, November 10 was designated as Heroes’ Day.

On the same day during the Indonesian national revolution, one of the bloodiest major battles in history occurred.When British allies came back to seize power after the Proclamation, the people of Surabaya fought back.
Fighting it out, thousands of Surabaya youth (
arek-arek Suroboyo
) did not run out of fighting spirit even when fighting allies whose weapons were superior at that time.
In the Battle of Surabaya, one of the national figures who played a big role was Bung Tomo.Through broadcasting on Indonesian People’s Rebel Radio (BPRI), Bung Tomo ignited the fire of enthusiasm for the Surabaya people’s troops.
In 1959, to commemorate this historic event, President Soekarno signed Presidential Decree Number 316 of 1959 which designated November 10 as Heroes’ Day, including national days that are not holidays.
To commemorate Heroes’ Day, people can make a pilgrimage and take a look at the graves of the nation’s warriors in the local heroes’ cemetery.
In general, there are three types of hero burial parks in Indonesia, reported on the official website of the Ministry of Tourism.Here are some of them,
Main National Heroes Cemetery (TMPN).
According to Law No. 20 of 2009, TMPN Utama is the Kalibata Heroes’ Cemetery which is located in the nation’s capital, Jakarta.Previously, the Heroes’ Cemetery was located in the Ancol area, central Jakarta.
However, because the location was deemed inadequate, President Soekarno relocated and eventually moved to the Kalibata Heroes’ Cemetery.
During the relocation, the first body to be moved was the late Agus Salim, a national hero who was also an accomplished diplomat and journalist of his time.Then, Agus Salim was buried at TMP Kalibata, followed by the bodies of other heroes.
Even though it is a cemetery, the architecture in this tomb garden is well considered.The TMP Kalibata area was designed by Friedrich Silaban, the same architect who also designed Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) and the Istiqlal Mosque.
TMP Kalibata is the final resting place for a number of heroes, including the late B.J.Habibie with his late wife, S. Parman, Adam Malik, RD Suprapto, H. Rasuna Said, MT Hardjono, Ahmad Yani, Djuanda Kartawijaya, AH Nasution, and Wigyo Atmodarminto
Not just anyone can reside at TMP Kalibata, because this is regulated in Law No. 29 of 2009 concerning Titles, Service Certificates and Honors.

National Heroes’ Cemetery (TMPN) is spread across various provinces and districts/cities throughout Indonesia.An example is the Taruna Heroes’ Cemetery.
At TMP Taruna, lie a number of officers who died during the struggle, especially victims of the Lengkong Incident.Including Daan Mogot, a hero who is also buried at TMP Taruna.
Daan Mogot is a decorated person, he was the founder and first director of the Tangerang Military Academy.Daan Mogot and 36 other fighters died as national officers in the Lengkong incident.
To commemorate his services, the name Daan Mogot was later immortalized as the name of the main road connecting Tangerang and Jakarta.
National Heroes Cemetery
The cemetery where the bodies of national heroes are buried outside TMPN is called the National Heroes Cemetery.People can also make pilgrimages to the graves of national heroes even though they are not in the TMP area.
