analyzed 28,303 adults over 11 years. As many as 48 percent of them are men.
Over an 11-year period, participants had consumed 25 percent or more of
The study found that within that time period, those who consumed 25 percent or more of their daily calorie needs from added sugar had an 88 percent higher risk of developing kidney stones.
Kidney stones themselves are one of the factors that accelerate kidney damage.
Added sugar can increase the amount of calcium in the urine.Excess calcium itself can increase the risk of kidney stone formation.
Additionally, consumption of added sugars can lead to weight gain, which is associated with high blood pressure, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. This is considered a risk factor for kidney stones.
Symptoms of kidney failure
In Sulistia’s case, her kidney damage was also exacerbated by other factors such as a family history of hypertension and the habit of drinking very little water. The combination of these factors makes kidney function decline more quickly.
Sulistia herself reportedly experienced initial symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, swelling and shortness of breath for two months before finally being diagnosed with kidney failure.
Urology specialist Nur Rasyid said that the symptoms of kidney failure often resemble gastric disorders in the early stages.
“So when people start to have kidney failure, they sometimes feel nauseous. Because there is urea that the kidneys have to get rid of,” said Rasyid, citing

He explained that kidney function was not damaged suddenly, but decreased little by little.
“Usually they take ulcer medicine first. Then, if the ulcer medicine doesn’t work, they go to the doctor. When they feel nauseous, their kidney function is already bad,” he said.
