This study was carried out by two anthropologists, Colin Shaw from Zurich University, Switzerland and Daniel Longman and Loughborough University, England. They say, the daily lives of today’s people are filled with
stressor
, starting from the large number of electronic letters (emails) to street noise.
As a result, the human body is always in a state of alert. This, they say, has not happened for most of human history.
This level of stress, they continued, triggers many problems in the body, including cognitive decline, autoimmune diseases, and decreased fertility.
The study also reviews evidence of poorer fitness among those living in urban areas. This is due to the relationship between air pollution, brain damage, and other factors.
Plus more
stressor
in the form of artificial light, exposure to microplastics, and a more sedentary lifestyle. All of this can make the body even more damaged.
“Our bodies react as if all these stress triggers were lions. Whether it’s an argument with a partner or boss, traffic noise, but they all trigger the same stress response system: like we’re facing a lion,” Shaw said, reporting
ScienceDirect
.
This study is basically a summary of all previous research on the potential adverse impacts on life and the environment in the 21st century.
This analysis states that, although today’s humans have made a lot of progress and success, they are basically people who are more anxious and more prone to depression than their ancestors.
To reduce this pressure, Shaw recommends that everyone take the time to spend time in nature. If you can’t, enjoying photos of natural scenery can also help.
