, there was a study involving around 630 male participants with an average age of 63 years and who had experienced a heart attack one month previously.
They also adjusted the dosage to maintain optimal levels throughout the trial.Then researchers randomly selected the control group and who would receive the targeted vitamin D3 treatment.
At enrollment, 87 percent of participants had low vitamin D levels.The target level is 40 nanograms/milliliter (ng/ml), and the average vitamin D level is 27 ng/ml.Researchers gave a high initial dose of vitamin D3 of 5,000 UI to almost 60 percent of participants.
Researchers monitored vitamin D3 levels throughout the trial to ensure they remained at target levels.If a person’s vitamin D levels fall below that, they receive vitamin D supplementation to return to normal levels.
During the trial, researchers recorded major cardiovascular events, including death, heart attack, hospitalization for heart failure, and stroke.
Although there were no significant differences between groups in overall cardiac events, the group given targeted vitamin D3 experienced only half the number of subsequent heart attacks compared to the control group.
The rate of subsequent heart attacks was 3.8 percent in the test group compared with 7.9 percent in the control group.
So while the results suggest that targeted vitamin D3 supplementation may not reduce all major cardiac outcomes, it did reduce the risk of recurrent heart attacks by more than half.
The study was presented at the American Heart Association 2025 meeting session but the results have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Board-certified Interventional Cardiologist and Medical Director of the Cardiac Program at Memorial Care Saddleback Medical Center Cheng-Han Chen, MD, commented on the findings and believes that a larger study of this research would have quite a significant impact.
Although he was not involved in this research, he reminded that vitamin D3 is not only useful for sufferers who have had a heart attack but also provides various cardiovascular benefits such as reducing inflammation and lowering blood pressure.
