who stalks early childhood in Indonesia. In fact, this mineral plays an important role in the formation of red blood cells, brain development and children’s immune system.
Lack of iron intake can have long-term impacts, ranging from anemia to impaired cognitive development. These findings are strengthened by an intervention study conducted by Medical Nutrition Doctor, Dian Novita Chandra on children aged 1-3 years in Jakarta.

This study evaluated the impact of consumption of fortified growth milk on children’s daily iron adequacy. The findings have also been presented at the 57th Annual Meeting of ESPGHAN on 14-17 May 2025.
The results showed that eight out of ten children who consumed iron-fortified growth milk at least twice per day were able to achieve 100 percent daily iron adequacy. This figure is higher than the group of children who only rely on daily food.
This finding is important considering that many Indonesian children do not meet the recommended iron intake of 7 milligrams per day.
“Iron deficiency is still a big challenge in early childhood, and can impact the risk of anemia, impaired cognitive development, decreased learning performance, and increased susceptibility to infection,” said Dian in a written statement, Sunday (14/12).
He said, ensuring children get sufficient sources of iron every day can make a real difference to their health.
“Appropriate nutritional interventions, including through fortified food choices, have been proven to help increase adequate iron intake and can be part of efforts to reduce the risk of early iron deficiency,” he said.
Apart from iron, digestive health also plays an important role in supporting nutrient absorption and children’s growth and development.Various scientific publications show that the condition of the gastrointestinal tract is closely related to the development of the immune system and cognitive function from early life.
Pediatrician, Andy Darma, emphasized that digestive health is an important foundation in the early stages of a child’s life.
“In the first 1,000 days of life, what happens in the digestive tract really determines the child’s future development,” he said.
He added that digestive health is related to brain development and children’s social and emotional abilities.Nutritional interventions such as prebiotics are considered to support the maturation of the digestive tract.
“A combination of prebiotics such as FOS, GOS and inulin is known to help increase the diversity of good bacteria in the intestine from an early age,” he said.
This scientific evidence-based approach is the reference in developing nutritional solutions for children and mothers.Medical and Scientific Affairs Director of Danone Specialized Nutrition Indonesia, Doctor Ray Wagiu Basrowi emphasized the importance of research as a basis for nutritional innovation.
Throughout 2025, various scientific publications related to child and maternal health have been presented in national and international forums, discussing key issues such as anemia, stunting, digestive health and maternal nutrition.
It is hoped that this research can strengthen efforts to fulfill children’s nutritional needs from an early age, while supporting optimal growth and development.
“Scientific publications are not just academic achievements, but are the foundation for ensuring that the nutritional innovations presented have real benefits and are relevant to public health needs,” said Ray.
