China warns its citizens not to travel to Japan, as a result, tourism and retail company shares are now in decline
Japan
dropped drastically. This polemic started to heat up when the Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, made comments about Taiwan.
As reported
The Guardian
, relations between the two countries have heated up in the past week after Takachi shared his aggressive views on China’s invasion.
Takachi suggested that the Japanese armed forces could intervene in the conflict over China’s invasion of Taiwan, if the situation was deemed to threaten Japan’s security. This comment is considered to reflect too much the political views of the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party, which seems to be anti-China.

Suddenly this sparked anger in Beijing, which then responded to these comments by boycotting Japan as a tourist destination.
On Sunday (16/11), a coast guard ship was also sent to the disputed area between the two countries.China’s coast guard said the ships were carrying out “rights enforcement patrols” through the waters of the Senkaku islands, islands administered by Japan but also claimed by China as the Diaoyu islands.
China’s call for its citizens to boycott Japan turned out to have serious consequences.Even prospective students who want to study at Japanese universities are also asked to reconsider.
Shares in many Japanese companies fell as a result of this boycott, considering that China is Japan’s largest source of tourists who spend a lot of money on clothes, cosmetics and electronics.
Shares of cosmetics company Shiseido fell nine percent, shares of department store group Takashimaya fell five percent, and shares of Fast Retailing (owner of the Uniqlo brand) fell four percent.
The impact of this action also spread to other sectors. On Monday, two Japanese animated films were postponed indefinitely in Chinese cinemas. It is claimed that this delay is part of China’s countermeasures.
On November 7, Takaichi told the Japanese parliament about sending Tokyo military forces to the Taiwan region claimed by China.
“If an emergency in Taiwan requires warships and the use of force, then it could become a situation that threatens (Japan’s) survival,” said Takaichi, as reported by
The Guardian
.
Meanwhile, the rules implemented in Japan state that they can act militarily only under certain conditions, for example there is an existential threat.
Officially, through the 1972 China-Japan communiqué document regarding bilateral relations, Japan fully understands and respects China’s stance regarding Taiwan as an inalienable part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China.
Takaichi’s controversial comments emerged a few days after he met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in South Korea, even though at the meeting he was considered friendly.
In addition, Taiwan’s presidential office considers Takaichi a “loyal friend”.He visited Taiwan several times and called for cooperation to strengthen relations, and met with Taipei representatives at the Apec Summit.
Then last week, China and Japan recalled their respective ambassadors.Beijing warns its citizens to avoid tourism to Japan.
To prevent tensions from escalating, the Director General of the Asia and Oceania Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Masaaki Kanai, will meet his counterpart in Japan, Liu Jinsong, on Tuesday.
The purpose of this meeting was for Kanai to calm China’s anger by ensuring that there would be no change in military policy like Takachi’s comments.Kanai wanted to urge China to refrain from actions that could damage bilateral relations between the two countries.
China and Japan have a strong trading relationship, but they also have historical distrust and bitter territorial disputes that make the relationship complicated.
