A heated debate erupted on Chinese social media after many tourists complained about the high cost of living in
Singapore
.Some tourists even claim they are forced to only eat one meal a day to save on expenses while on holiday.
On Chinese social media platforms such as RedNote and Weibo, netizens share stories about prices that are considered expensive in Singapore, such as lime tea in a plastic cup for 4 yuan (around Rp. 8,800), a bottle of mineral water for 15 yuan (around Rp. 33 thousand), a sandwich for 50 yuan (around Rp. 110 thousand), and a seafood dinner for two that goes up to 3,000 yuan (around Rp. 6.6 million).
“Singapore is so expensive that I lost 3 kg in three days. I only eat one meal a day, namely free breakfast at the hotel, and I only drink water when I return to the hotel,” wrote one netizen in a post on Weibo, as reported

Some tourists are also surprised that a 10-minute taxi ride in Singapore can cost more than 100 yuan (around Rp. 220 thousand), compared to less than 20 yuan (around Rp. 44 thousand) for the same trip in China, their home country.

According to Numbeo, the world’s largest database of user-contributed data about cities and countries, the estimated average monthly expenditure of an individual in Singapore is S$1,506 or around IDR 17.4 million.
Some netizens commented that Singapore is too expensive and prefer other Asian countries such as Malaysia and Vietnam which offer more things to see and are better value.
However, quite a few have defended the city-state, saying Singapore looks like a paradise with a low crime rate, strict laws, a high sense of civilization and a clean environment.
“Heaven has a price, nothing is cheap in this world,” wrote one netizen.
“Singapore is not for poor people. If you don’t have money, perhaps visiting cheaper alternatives around Singapore would be an ideal choice,” replied another netizen.
“Try taking a taxi in Europe or the US. You will find that Singapore taxis are quite cheap,” said another netizen.
