West on Thursday (27/12), the public’s focus was on human evacuation. On the other hand, small creatures who are also victims of disasters are often overlooked.
However, in Padang, a woman named Salmiati showed that empathy never recognizes species boundaries.
The 40-year-old woman spends her days wandering around the city, looking for cats that have been swept away by floods or abandoned in the ruins of houses.Almost everything he found was in poor condition, sick, injured, some even had tumors.

Nevertheless, he helped them with the same gentleness as saving humans.
In the few days since the flood hit, the mother of two has evacuated around 30 cats from roadsides, house rubble, landslides and rubbish dumps.Everyone was taken to his simple shelter in Kampung Teleng, Lubuk Kilangan, a remote building far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
A simple shelter for a love that is not simple
From the outside, the shelter looks like a small warehouse with a rocky access road. But behind its doors, there is a small world full of life, about 130 cats, two puppies and one adult dog.
Stacks of sacks of cat food greet everyone who enters. The 5 x 25 meter space is clean even though it is filled with the distinctive smell of animals.
Every corner is neatly arranged, a room for healthy cats, a room for those who are almost recovering, and a special room for seriously ill animals.
The choice of a remote location is not without reason.Previously, Salmiati was evicted by residents because she was considered to be disturbing the environment due to her activities in caring for hundreds of abandoned animals.
He realized that kindness was not always warmly welcomed. So he chose to stay away, for the sake of comfort around him and for the continuity of his small mission.
His love for animals began in 2009, when he was still working as a courier. While delivering a package and passing by a rubbish dump, he heard the sound of a cat meowing weakly.
At first he ignored it.But the sound continued to ring on the journey. He stopped his motorbike, turned around, and saved the cat.Since that day, his life changed.
So far, he has evacuated more than 1,000 cats and dogs in Padang, Payakumbuh and Solok. Many have been adopted, some left due to illness, but all have felt his love.
Open donate
Caring for hundreds of animals is clearly not an easy matter, especially for a family who lives simply. In the beginning, he relied on private money. But the number of animals continues to increase, as do the costs of feeding, treatment and sterilization.
He finally opened donations via social media. The community provides assistance in various nominal amounts, while Salmiati always reports income and expenses transparently.
But donations are not always enough.Sometimes she and her husband have to dig into their savings to take the cat to the doctor.Even so, he never once regretted it.
For Salmiati, caring for cats is not just about giving them food or shelter. That’s the call of the heart.
To increase his income, he opened a cat taxi service, bathing, cleaning and leaving animals. All for the survival of the shelter residents.
After 16 years in business, his biggest dream is simple, to have a bigger and more suitable shelter, complete with parks, open spaces, adequate places to eat, and health facilities.
“That’s all I hope, because this is about feelings and the mind,” he said quietly.
