Dementia
or senile disease is a degenerative brain condition that is estimated to be experienced by more than 1.2 million people in Indonesia.
This disease generally attacks individuals over the age of 50 years and causes a decline in cognitive function which affects a person’s memory, emotions and ability to make decisions.
The impacts of dementia are varied. In the early stages, a person may simply have difficulty remembering other people’s names or faces. However, quoted from

, when it reaches an advanced stage, patients can forget basic functions, such as how to think and how to walk.

Although dementia cannot yet be cured, early detection is crucial because the course of the disease can be slowed. If the disease is detected at an advanced stage, efforts to improve the patient’s quality of life are very limited.
Dian Purnomo from Alzheimer’s Indonesia (ALZI) explains the difference between normal forgetting and forgetting which is an early symptom of dementia.
Recognizing Early Symptoms of Dementia
“There are seven levels of dementia and usually it is only discovered in the middle to late levels where it starts to interfere with the condition,” said Dian as quoted

, some time ago.
Dian gave an example of forgetting that needs to be watched out for as a sign of dementia, compared to ordinary forgetting.”If you forget the characteristics of ‘oh, what did I put where,’ you can still remember later that it’s not Alzheimer’s,” he said.
“But if, for example, he wants to stop by the post office to send something, when he gets home he sees the letter is still there and then thinks, ‘Huh, why is this in the bag?'”It’s really difficult to collect memories again, that’s a sign that we need to go to the doctor,” he explained.
If left unchecked, the impact will get worse, beyond just forgetting an object. At higher levels, patients may even have difficulty swallowing because they forget how to chew, which is actually basic.
Considering that patients often do not realize or refuse to be considered sick (denial), the role
caregivers
(who are generally family members) is very important to be alert and persuade patients to carry out early detection.
“That’s why we are campaigning with the young people because when the old people get it, they usually deny it, ‘who is senile? There aren’t any’. So the young people have to be more aware,” stressed Dian.
Dian also added that symptoms that are clearly visible and often only trigger a visit to the doctor include:
– Likes accusing people of stealing.
– Forgot his own signature.
– Things often get lost.
