Some can actually trigger digestive disorders and even hinder the absorption of nutrients.
The following is a list of foods and drinks that are not recommended to be consumed together with boiled cassava:
1. Sour foods and drinks
Acidic foods and drinks such as citrus, tomatoes and vinegar can react with the resistant starch in boiled cassava. If consumed together, the fermentation process in the intestines takes place more quickly, triggering excess gas.
This condition triggers bloating, a full stomach, and discomfort after eating. To be safer, acidic foods should be given some time after you eat boiled cassava.
2. Milk and animal protein
Many people think that milk is suitable to drink with boiled cassava, even though this combination has the potential to increase stomach acid.
A similar thing can also happen when cassava is consumed with animal protein such as chicken, beef or fish. The combination of high protein and high starch can make the digestive system work harder, triggering bloating and discomfort.
3. Foods and drinks high in sugar
Boiled cassava already contains high carbohydrates which will be converted into glucose by the body. Therefore, sweet foods such as candy, cakes, ice cream, or drinks high in sugar should not be eaten together with cassava.
Combining the two can make blood sugar levels spike more quickly than usual and increase the risk of digestive disorders.
4. Coffee
Coffee is often chosen as a companion to boiled cassava snacks. However, you need to pay attention to the interaction of the ingredients.
“Polyphenols and caffeine in coffee can inhibit the absorption of non-heme iron when consumed with foods rich in iron,” said lecturer at the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Human Ecology, IPB, Reisi Nurdiani, quoted from the IPB website.
In addition, coffee stimulates stomach acid production. When combined with cassava which is high in fiber and starch, the effect can trigger bloating, gas and discomfort.
To avoid this risk, you should consume coffee 30-60 minutes after eating boiled cassava.
