, Jane revealed that they started saving money in 2015, just when both of their careers started to stabilize.
She and her husband set long-term financial goals, including the dream of retiring early to enjoy a slower, more travel-filled pace of life.
“We were able to save almost 90 percent of our income by keeping expenses low,” says Jane.
They also rent out an extra room in their flat, invest that income, and focus on stocks that pay dividends.
Years of that discipline mean they end up living off the dividends even before they actually stop working. And they did for more than a decade.
Over the past year, their travel expenses per day reached around S$50 thousand or around IDR 600 thousand, the majority of which was for accommodation. However, they consider this figure commensurate with the freedom they now experience.
Meiji, the perfect travel companion
The decision to bring Meiji along also raised questions. But for Matt and Jane, life is too short to worry.
“Meiji is slower than when he was a puppy, but his health is good and he is very easy to travel with,” said Jane.
“He sleeps when we drive or when we need to rest, and plays when we explore. He really is the perfect travel companion.”
Their initial plan was to leave in 2020. But the pandemic changed everything.
However, the delay actually gave them additional time to tidy up the flat which had been full of things for years.
“It took us almost six weeks to donate and sell the items on Carousell,” Jane said with a laugh.
Matt and Jane aim to travel for two to three years before returning to Singapore. However, their return home does not mean returning to their old life. They don’t plan to return to work full time.
“Maybe we’ll try flexible working or set up a small business. Matt is interested in the gold and silver pawn business, while I want to do something related to dogs,” said Jane.
