Minister of State Secretary, Prasetyo Hadi, said that PUBG is an example of a game with high risks because it displays various types of weapons and battle scenes.
“For example, PUBG, there are many types of weapons that are very easy to learn. This is dangerous because it can foster the habit of seeing violence as normal,” he said.
However, is it true that online games like PUBG can encourage extreme behavior in children?
Clinical psychologist Anastasia Sari Dewi assesses that online games are now not just entertainment, but part of a child’s social environment. In the digital world, children interact with many people who are not necessarily known or have the same values.
“Online games are environmental, because children can meet many people out there online and we don’t know what their origins or background are like. There could be influence from misleading suggestions,” said Sari, quoting Detik.
He warned that games with violent elements can dull emotional sensitivity.
“Sadistic games now look very detailed. If children are exposed to them often, after a while things like that will feel normal. This is dangerous,” he stressed.
Sari suggests that parents and schools actively balance children’s digital exposure with activities that build empathy and social skills.
“Add activities that introduce various types of emotions, social values, tolerance and empathy. Teenagers are often only equipped with religious norms, but don’t know how to interact socially or understand conflict. This can make them stuck and vent their emotions in extreme ways,” he explained.
Likewise, child and adolescent psychologist Sani Budiantini Hermawan said that the culture of playing violent games is difficult to avoid, but it needs to be balanced with control and healthy alternatives.
“Often, bloody games for children are not scary, but normal. This is worrying,” he said.
He added that parents need to pay attention to their child’s real behavior in the everyday world, whether there are changes in the way they speak, aggressive attitudes or empathy.
“If you see changes in behavior, it means there are effects that you need to be aware of,” said Sani.
Beware of exposure to extreme ideologies
Furthermore, Sani highlighted another danger that often goes unnoticed, namely exposure to extreme ideologies in cyberspace.
“Children may find out about terrorism, extreme ideologies, or see perpetrators of violence as role models. They feel that extreme actions can channel their emotions or even get them noticed,” he said.
According to Sani, extreme behavior is often born from accumulated suffering that cannot be channeled.
“Sometimes children feel that no one is helping them, so they look for ways to let people know they are hurt, one of which is through extreme behavior that ends up going viral,” he said.
