“It can happen. This hernia is actually one of the most common operations performed by children,” saidĀ KarmileĀ at a press conference in Central Jakarta, Thursday (18/12).
Medically, a hernia is defined as a condition where organs or tissue come out of their original cavity due to weakness or failure of the body wall to close.
“A hernia is the protrusion of part or all of an organ or tissue through the wall of the cavity in which it is located, this could be due to weakness of the wall or failure of the closure process,” he said.
Basically, hernia cases know no age. However, cases of hernias in children are more common in newborns.Unfortunately, in some cases, hernias are detected late even in adolescence.
“I can
just do it
came to me when I was 16 years old.We ask,
that’s it
, when did it appear?Turns out it was from a baby [hernia]
that’s it
appeared, but [the child] was fine.
Well
“We only had surgery when we were older,” he said.
Types of hernias in children
Hernias in children can appear in various locations of the body, depending on the type and mechanism of occurrence. However, the most common ones are inguinal hernias which appear in the groin area or thigh crease and umbilical hernias which appear in the navel area.
Karmile said that genetic factors play a role in the formation of hernias in children. If parents have experienced a hernia, then the child who is born is at risk of experiencing the same condition.
Inguinal hernia
Inguinal hernias in children most often occur due to failure to close
processus vaginalis
, namely the channel that should close after the baby is born.
This condition is different from several other types of hernias in children, which generally appear in older children.
“If it is due to failure to close
processus vaginalis
“Usually the lump has been visible since the baby was born, even after birth it was visible,” he said.
This hernia case occurs more often in male babies.A hernia occurs when the testis that is initially in the stomach then descends into the scrotum through a pathway
processus vaginalis
.
If the tube fails to close after the testicle descends, organs such as the intestine can enter it and form a lump that is often visible from infancy, even from birth.
In girls, inguinal hernias can also occur. However, the contents of the lump are often not the intestines, but the ovaries.
“Whether it’s the intestines, ovaries, or fat, as long as it comes out of its original cavity, it’s still called a hernia,” he stressed.
Umbilical hernia
Meanwhile, umbilical hernias occur purely due to failure to close the abdominal wall in the navel area.
“The abdominal wall closes from the outside to the middle. Ideally it is finished at birth, but many babies still have a ring remaining in the navel that has not closed completely,” he said.

Symptoms of hernia in children
Symptoms of hernias in children can be mild to severe, depending on the condition and whether there is organ clamping. Here are some symptoms to watch out for:
– a lump in the groin in an inguinal hernia and in the center in an umbilical hernia,
– the lump is not painful and can come and go, especially when the child cries or pushes,
– the lump can also be reddish,
– the child is fussy, looks sick, and is accompanied by vomiting,
– flatulence and bloody stools if the clamp hits a blood vessel in the intestine.
Unfortunately, Karmile said, hernias in the early stages are often difficult to detect because they come and go.
“Even though the family said there was a lump, when we looked at it there wasn’t any, but if there is information about the history of the lump, we have to be alert, because in the early stages it usually comes and goes. So it’s very likely that when you go to the doctor the lump will be there and it won’t be there,” he explained.
Diagnosis of hernia in children
To diagnose a hernia in a child, doctors usually rely on several stages, starting from family information to supporting examinations. The diagnosis process includes:
– family history, including the story of the appearance of the lump or documentation in the form of photos and videos,
– direct physical examination by a doctor,
– supporting examinations such as ultrasonography (USG),
– incidental findings during surgery,
By recognizing the types and symptoms of hernias from an early age, it is hoped that parents will be more alert to the appearance of abnormal lumps in their children.Immediately consult a doctor to get the right treatment.
