The Indonesian Ministry of Health reported 2,264 new cases
HIV
on
pregnant mother
in the period January to September 2025. These findings were obtained from examination of 2,482,837 pregnant women, with a positive case rate of around 0.09 percent.
Even though thousands of pregnant women have been identified as positive, the Ministry of Health said that only 68 percent have started antiretroviral therapy (ARV), an important step to reduce the risk of transmission to the baby.

Mother-to-child transmission still occurs
In the last three years, the rate of HIV transmission from mother to child has decreased, but not significantly.Here’s the data:
• 2023: 137 children infected
• 2024: 132 children
• 2025: 88 children
“The significant increase in coverage of baby prophylaxis has made the gap between the number of HIV positive pregnant women and babies receiving prophylaxis smaller. Since 2023 the positivity rate for babies born to PLHIV mothers has decreased,” said Head of the Ministry of Health’s HIV-AIDS Working Team, Tiersa Vera Junita M, quoted from

The Ministry of Health also noted that PLHIV children are still included in the three highest contributing groups to HIV cases, with a positivity rate reaching 17 percent.
The following are the three groups with the highest number of cases:
1. PLHIV couples, including housewives who were infected by their husbands: 3,339 cases from 9,709 tests (positivity rate 34 percent).
2. Sex worker clients: 4,471 cases from 22,454 tests (positivity rate 20 percent).
3. PLHIV children: 728 cases from 4,254 tests (positivity rate 17 percent).
The Ministry of Health emphasizes the importance of early detection, baby prophylaxis, and expanding access to ARV therapy to suppress the chain of transmission, especially in vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and children.
