Coconut water
Often referred to as a natural drink that is refreshing and healthy. However, recently a concern arises that the consumption of coconut water every day can cause
kidney failure
.Is that true?
Clinical nutrition specialist, Johannes Chandrawinata, emphasized that this assumption was certainly wrong.According to him, coconut water is actually safe for consumption and does not cause kidney failure, especially in healthy people.
“In general, it is impossible for coconut water to cause kidney failure. Unless there is a accompanying disease or contamination that causes severe vomiting, it can only trigger complications of kidney failure,” Johannes explained when contacted by goldensamoyedIndonesia.com, Monday (9/22).

Johannes explained, coconut water contains various substances and nutrients needed by the body. Most consist of water, which is around 95 percent and 4 percent carbohydrates, with relatively low calories of 19 calories per 100 ml.
The protein and fat content is almost non -existent.While vitamins and minerals are in small amounts, less than 10 percent of nutritional adequacy rates (AKG).
However, coconut water contains important electrolytes such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium. These minerals are useful to help the body replace electrolytes that are lost while exercising.
“Coconut water is special because it contains electrolytes, but the sugar content is small and it tastes natural. Different from packaged sports drinks,” Johannes said.
He said, the potassium content in coconut water helps remove sodium through urine.Adequate potassium intake can maintain normal blood pressure, thereby reducing the risk of hypertension.
In addition, coconut water also contains citrate which can help prevent the formation of kidney stones. Therefore, this drink actually supports kidney health when consumed in reasonable amounts.
“It is very healthy and good, but yes consumed in reasonable amounts because everything is excessive right is not good,” he said.
Limits for people with kidney disease
Although safe for most people, patients with chronic kidney disease must still be careful.High potassium in coconut water can accumulate in the blood because the kidneys are unable to process it well. This condition is known as hypercalemia.
“Coconut water contains potassium. In people with disrupted kidney function, potassium levels can increase and it is dangerous,” Johannes said.
Hypercalemia can trigger heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmia) to be fatal. Therefore, people with kidney disease should consult a doctor before consuming coconut water.
Drinking coconut water every day will not cause kidney failure for people with healthy body conditions. In fact, the electrolyte content and its citrate provide additional benefits compared to ordinary water.
However, for people with chronic kidney disease, consumption of coconut water needs to be limited so as not to pose a risk of hypercalemia.
