Diabetes is often referred to as ”
mother of all diseases
” or the mother of all diseases. This is because diabetes can trigger various serious disorders in almost all of the body’s vital organs.
Unfortunately, many sufferers only realize the impact when their condition is already severe. In fact, recognizing diabetes complications early is an important step to prevent more serious damage.
This was conveyed by Dr.Luse, Sp.PD-KEMD, FINASIM, from Mayapada Hospital Tangerang. He explained that uncontrolled diabetes can cause damage to small blood vessels (microangiopathy).

“Uncontrolled diabetes can cause damage to small blood vessels or microangiopathy, which risks damaging the kidneys, eyes and nerves,” he said, quoted on Tuesday (28/10).
According to Doctor Luse, one of the complications of diabetes can also attack the kidneys or Diabetic Nephropathy, which often has no symptoms until kidney function decreases severely.
“Signs that appear are usually swelling in the legs and foamy urine, which can even lead to chronic kidney failure which requires dialysis. Therefore, regular checks of urine and kidney function are very important,” he explained.
Apart from the kidneys, diabetes can also attack the eye organs through a condition known as Diabetic Retinopathy.According to Dr.Luse, the initial symptoms are often ignored, such as blurred vision or the appearance of floating shadows (floaters).
“This can lead to permanent blindness if not treated. Therefore, diabetes patients are advised to have their eyes checked at least once a year,” he explained.
Apart from the eyes, diabetes can also damage the nerves. Diabetic Neuropathy makes patients lose sensation in the hands and feet.Symptoms, he said, include tingling, numbness or a burning sensation.
“And there is a risk of causing invisible wounds and infections that can lead to amputation or what is known as diabetic foot,” he said.
Not only the eyes and nerves, diabetes can also damage large blood vessels or macroangiopathy which triggers chronic complications such as the risk of heart attacks, strokes and blood blockages in the legs.
“Diabetic patients have a 2-4 times higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke. This fatal condition can be characterized by symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath, sudden weakness, and can even lead to death,” he said.
Apart from chronic complications, very high blood sugar can trigger emergency conditions such as Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, fruit-smelling breath, and even coma.
In type 2 diabetes, hyperosmolar hyperglycemia can also occur with symptoms of severe dehydration and decreased consciousness. These two conditions cannot be treated at home and must be immediately taken to the Emergency Room (IGD).
Even so, according to Dr.The complications of diabetes can actually be prevented by regularly monitoring blood sugar, following a healthy diet, and taking regular medication.
“Unfortunately, many patients come to the hospital after complications arise, for example kidney failure or blindness. Diabetes is not just about high sugar, but a systemic disease that can damage almost all organs in the body. Therefore, early detection and tight control are very important to prevent permanent damage,” he said.
