Pets and carriers with a combined weight exceeding 60 kilograms will be prohibited from flying onĀ Air New Zealand aircraft.
This implementation is a joint safety effort, especially for the security of airline and airport staff on duty.
“This is a somewhat difficult decision, we appreciate that this step will be disappointing. However, it would be fairer if there were fewer large pets,” said Air NZ Chief Safety and Integrity Officer, Nathan McGraw, as quoted by

.
Furthermore, McGraw revealed that more than 50 staff members had been injured over the last few years, most of which were due to the activity of loading large items into narrow aircraft spaces.
“When staff load these items into tight spaces, there is a lot of movement, positioning and tilting. Especially if there are large animals inside that may move and shift, there is a risk that our people could be injured or compromise the welfare of the pet,” said McGraw.
After this new prohibition policy is implemented, it does not mean that airline passengers can no longer fly with their pets.
McGraw explained that it is still possible for Air NZ passengers who want to travel with animals and cages weighing more than 60 kilograms, but must go through a pet transportation company that works with Air NZ.
“They work closely with our team. You can add a pet as before to your ticket, but have to go through that company’s options. The same for our jet service can carry larger crates by going through the transport company,” he concluded.
