On November 15, Stewart was found in critical condition. The autopsy results revealed the surprising fact that his large intestine was blocked by hardened feces weighing more than 9 kilograms. This extreme buildup then triggers a dangerous condition called tension pneumoperitoneum.
What is tension pneumoperitoneum?
Tension pneumoperitoneum is a condition when air is trapped in the abdominal cavity and causes very high pressure. This pressure can disrupt blood flow, put pressure on organs, reduce respiratory function, and cause organ failure.
A specialist in internal medicine, Aru Ariadno, explained that one of the causes of this condition is perforation or tearing of the intestine.
“Chronic constipation can also cause perforation, which results in tension pneumoperitoneum. And a condition like this is very life-threatening,” he said, quoting Detik.
Increased air pressure in the stomach can cause circulation problems, compress large veins, and cause hypotension or low blood pressure. In fact, breathing can be disrupted because the diaphragm is pushed upwards.
Symptoms that may appear include:
• The stomach suddenly becomes enlarged
• Severe abdominal pain
• Shortness of breath
• Blood pressure decreases
According to Aru, tension pneumoperitoneum can still be treated if the patient immediately gets medical help. One of the main steps is surgery to reduce pressure in the abdominal cavity and repair the area of the intestine that has perforated.
“Yes, you can, as long as it’s not too late,” he stressed.
Unfortunately, Stewart did not receive timely treatment and eventually died due to these serious complications.
Watch out for chronic constipation
This case highlights the importance of paying attention to the signs of chronic constipation, especially if experienced for months.Aru explains several signs of chronic constipation to watch out for:
• Defecation less than three times a week for more than three months
• Very hard stools
• Feeling of incompleteness after defecation
“If it’s like that, you should be careful immediately,” said Aru.
