Efforts to present
birth control pills
for men is getting closer to reality.A number of recent studies show promising results, although experts emphasize that long-term safety must still be proven through further clinical trials.
One of the most talked about candidates is YCT-529, a non-hormonal male birth control pill that is now entering advanced stages of clinical trials. The findings regarding this pill were widely discussed after being published in the Communications Medicine journal and reported by various international media, including the Daily Mail and a number of science publications.

YCT-529 works by inhibiting the process of sperm formation without affecting hormones, libido or mood, a breakthrough that has been difficult to achieve in male contraceptive research.
In a report by the University of Minnesota and YourChoice Therapeutics, initial animal tests showed high effectiveness. In mice, this pill was able to prevent pregnancy up to 99 percent within four weeks of use.
In non-human primates, a decrease in sperm count began to be seen after just two weeks, and fertility was fully restored after the drug was discontinued.
Meanwhile, Scientific American reported that early stage clinical trials on 16 healthy men aged 32-59 years also showed positive results.Participants who received a dose of 10-180 mg per day for a month did not experience significant changes in hormone levels, libido, or mood.
These findings give hope that non-hormonal methods can be a safer male contraceptive option with minimal side effects.
Side effects are still being monitored
Even though it looks safe, the researchers caution that small-scale tests are not enough to demonstrate long-term safety.
In a report quoted by the Daily Mail, several participants reported respiratory tract infections, while one participant experienced cardiac arrhythmia. It is not yet certain whether this condition is related to drug consumption or other factors.
Researchers are also still studying whether inhibiting retinoic acid, the main mechanism of this pill, only impacts the testicles or has the potential to affect other organs.Retinoic acid is known to have important functions in various body systems, including the immune system, so further research is needed.
The way male birth control pills work is also not instant. It takes about two months for sperm production to completely decrease. After stopping consumption, the body needs 2-3 months to fully restore sperm production.
Thus, the effects of this pill are reversible and will return to normal when use is stopped.
When will it be available to the public?
Currently, larger-scale clinical trials are underway to assess the safety and effectiveness of YCT-529 in more depth. If all stages go smoothly, the development company estimates that this non-hormonal male birth control pill could be widely available in the next few years.
The emergence of the male birth control pill is considered an important step in realizing fairer contraceptive choices between men and women.Experts assess that its presence can help share responsibilities in family planning as well as increase options for couples.
