The additional revenue will be used to fund structural repairs at the world’s most famous art museum, especially after last month’s theft of priceless treasures.
From January 14 2026, visitors from outside the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway will have to pay 32 euros, a 10 euro increase on the previous price. This decision was approved at a meeting of the museum’s board and staff union.
According to a 2024 report published by the Louvre, the museum received 8.7 million visitors that year, and 69 percent of them were foreigners.United States tourists account for the most, with Chinese visitors occupying third place.
The museum told
AFP
that this price increase aims to raise up to 20 million euros per year to address “structural problems”.
The need for these repairs became especially urgent after an incident on October 19, in which a four-person gang stormed the Louvre and took just seven minutes to steal jewelry worth around US$102 million or around IDR 1.59 trillion before fleeing on scooters.
An official investigation indicated that the museum’s security equipment was severely lacking.
Despite this, unions criticized the decision to remove universal entry fees for all nationalities. One union, CFDT, warned that the move would be perceived as “discrimination”.
