Thousands of visitors flock to the Grand Egyptian
Museums
in Cairo,
Egypt
, on Tuesday (4/11), to witness the largest exhibition in modern archaeological history, the complete collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures being displayed together for the first time since the discovery of his tomb in 1922.
More than 4,500 valuable artifacts from the young pharaoh now decorate the museum’s spacious and well-lit main hall.Among the displays, visitors can see war chariots, jewelry encrusted with precious stones, household furniture, and personal objects depicting the life of the young king thousands of years ago.

At the center of the room stands Ancient Egypt’s most famous icon, the golden mask of King Tutankhamun.The mask is surrounded by gold-plated tools, funerary statues and royal family relics depicting the glory of the 18th Dynasty.

, not far away, another exhibition hall displays two of Tutankhamun’s daughters buried as fetuses, their mummies on display for the first time to the public.
Tutankhamun is believed to have died at the age of 18 or 19, around 1323 BC.Genetic and radiological studies showed the cause of death was likely a combination of malaria and bone abnormalities.
He was buried in the Valley of the Kings, Luxor, in a three-layered casket enclosed by four gold-plated sacred chambers.Today, the coffins are in a museum, while the original mummy remains in Luxor.
Apart from the Tutankhamun collection, visitors can also see the Khufu Sun Boat, a sun boat which is said to be the oldest and largest wooden artifact in human history.
The 43.5 meter long boat was made from cedar and acacia wood more than 4,600 years ago, and is believed to have been used to transport King Khufu to the afterlife.The second boat is now being restored and will soon be exhibited in a special conservatory.
The Grand Egyptian Museum, which overlooks the Giza Plateau, features modern architecture with large triangular windows that allow natural light to illuminate the colossal statues and fine jewelry of ancient Egyptian civilization.
This US$1 billion museum was officially inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in a magnificent ceremony attended by kings, queens, heads of state and honored guests from various countries.The Egyptian government hopes that the existence of this museum can revive the tourism sector and strengthen the national economy.
Egyptian Tourism Minister Sherif Fathy said the museum is projected to attract five million visitors per year, making it one of the most visited museums in the world.Since opening, the number of daily visitors has reached 5,000 to 6,000 people.
