Japan’s Meteorological Corporation
(JMC) estimates that their first cherry blossoms this year will bloom in the capital around mid-March 2026.

, March 19 2026 may be the day that many Japanese have been waiting for.On that day, the first cherry blossoms are expected to start blooming in Tokyo and Nagoya, specifically in Aichi Prefecture, which is the industrial and technological center of Japan.
Meanwhile, cherry blossoms are expected to fully bloom a week later there, to be precise on March 26 2026 in Tokyo and March 28 2026 in Nagoya.
Apart from these two cities, blooming Sakura will also decorate a number of other cities.On March 20, 2026, it is estimated that cherry blossoms will bloom in Fukuoka and Kochi.Kochi cherry blossoms will fully bloom on March 27 2026, followed by Fukuoka cherry blossoms on March 29 2026.
What about popular tourist cities in Japan?Don’t worry, tourists who travel to the Osaka and Kyoto areas can see cherry blossoms in bloom starting from March 24 2026. However, if you want to see these flowers in full bloom, go there on March 31 2026.
Meanwhile, northern Japanese cities experience a slower spring season.Japan’s meteorological service estimates spring there will only start in April.
Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture is expected to see cherry blossoms blooming on April 5, 2026, with full bloom on April 10, 2026.
Even later, Sapporo and Hokkaido are even expected to see cherry blossoms blooming towards the end of the month, namely on April 28 2026. It is hoped that cherry blossoms will be in full bloom there on May 1 2026.
JMC’s estimate is based on Yoshino’s popular study of Cherry Trees in about 1,000 locations across the country.JMC also explained that the estimated date is determined by several factors, including temperature patterns from the previous autumn.
Even though next January there may be a shift in the estimated dates above, at least this could be an answer to the increasing demand for information from domestic and international tourists regarding when cherry blossoms will bloom in Japan in 2026.
