The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) issued an advisory regarding vaccination
influenza
following the trend of increasing flu cases that occurred towards the end of the year in various regions of Indonesia.
This spike in cases is in line with the annual influenza circulation pattern in tropical climate areas such as Indonesia.
Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases at the Indonesian Ministry of Health, dr.Ina Agustina Isturini, said that the increase in cases occurred at the end to the beginning of the year, coinciding with the rainy season.

“Based on data from the last few years, there has been an increase in cases at the end of the year, during the rainy season,” said Dr.Ina Agustina, as reported by Detik.
It is emphasized that the influenza vaccine or flu vaccine can increase the body’s immunity, help prevent serious symptoms, and reduce the risk of patients experiencing fatal complications such as pneumonia and sepsis.
Priority Groups Required for Influenza Vaccine
The Indonesian Ministry of Health prioritizes influenza vaccination for vulnerable groups who have a high risk of experiencing serious complications:
– Elderly
– Children under 5 years old
– Comorbid sufferers (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and history of other comorbidities)
– Pregnant women
– Health workers.
Apart from vaccination, people, especially vulnerable groups, are advised to implement prevention protocols, namely: covering their mouths when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or bent elbow, washing their hands regularly, and wearing masks in crowded places or rooms with poor ventilation.
The Ministry of Health also recommends vaccination for other available respiratory diseases, such as the PCV vaccine (
Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine
).
In line with the Ministry of Health, respiratory health expert from IPB University, Desdiani, reminded that the recent spike in flu cases is not only influenced by individual factors, but also by environmental dynamics and climate change.
Desdiani highlighted temperature anomalies in Indonesia. The average air temperature in September 2025 will reach 26.91 degrees Celsius, higher than the climatological average of 26.56 degrees Celsius.
“This temperature anomaly is the seventh highest since 1981 and has the potential to increase people’s vulnerability to respiratory tract infections,” said Desdiani on the official IPB University website.
Apart from that, recent temperature fluctuations between day and night (diurnal) have become larger, even hourly temperature variability can reach 4 to 5 degrees Celsius.
“Extreme temperature differences between day and night can reduce local respiratory tract immunity. When the body has not had time to adapt to rapid changes in temperature, the risk of being infected with the influenza virus increases,” he explained.
Climate change, urbanization and air pollution – including pollutants such as aerosols – also strengthen the spread of influenza viruses types A and B. Dry or cold air is also said to reduce the effectiveness of the respiratory mucosal defense system, making a person more easily infected.
Desdiani reiterated that annual influenza vaccination has proven effective in reducing the risk of hospitalization, pneumonia and death, especially for vulnerable groups.
“Vaccines not only protect individuals, but also help build community immunity, so they can suppress the potential for widespread outbreaks,” he concluded.
