Pondok Indah Hospital pediatric surgeon, Karmile, explained that treating hernias in children depends on the type. The two most common types of hernia, namely umbilical and ingunal, have different treatments.
For umbilical hernias that occur in the navel, not all cases require immediate surgery. In some cases, an umbilical hernia can close on its own.
“We can still observe umbilical hernias in children first because there is a possibility that they will close on their own,” said Karmile at a press conference in Central Jakarta, Thursday (18/12).
Observations are usually carried out until the child is 3-4 years old. However, umbilical hernia surgery needs to be considered if certain conditions are found, such as a lump that persists until the age of 4 years with a diameter of more than 2 centimeters (cm).
Surgery is really needed for cases of inguinal hernia that cannot heal on their own. This type of hernia is located in the groin or thigh crease. This hernia also cannot be cured with medication or massage.
“Parents sometimes try to take them to a massage therapist, or take herbal medicines. It won’t close. Unlike the umbilical, which is still in the process of closing, the inguinal can’t,” he stressed.
Once the diagnosis of an inguinal hernia is confirmed, continued Karmile, surgery is the only effective therapy.
“If a patient comes with complaints of a lump in the groin, then the treatment is definitely surgery,” he said.
Risks if a hernia is not treated immediately
If not treated, continued Irene, hernias in children can cause pinched organs or tissue, organ leakage, and tissue or organ death. All of them are emergencies.
This risk is what makes doctors now recommend earlier treatment, especially for inguinal hernias.
After surgery, the child will be monitored for 24-48 hours.Surgical wounds should be kept clean and dry, with a waterproof dressing.
Children are also advised not to do strenuous activities for approximately three months to ensure the healing process runs optimally.
With proper and timely treatment, hernias in children can be cured with good results and minimal risk of complications.
