Although it is often associated with ‘the disease of the rich’ because it used to attack many nobles who liked to feast on luxurious food, it is now known that the cause is much more complex.
Genetics and gout
According to Summit Rheumatology, since the 17th century, scientists began to suspect that gout was related to genetic factors. Now, modern research has identified a number of genes that can increase a person’s risk of experiencing this disorder, including ABCG2 and SLC2A9.
These two genes play a role in the urate transport system in the kidneys, namely the body’s process of eliminating excess uric acid through urine. If a person inherits a gene that causes this system to work more slowly, more uric acid will accumulate in the blood.
This means that even if a person does not often eat foods high in purine such as red meat, offal or seafood, the risk of developing gout is still there if he has this hereditary factor.
“If your parents have a history of gout, chances are you also carry the same gene. This is not a personal fault, but a biological one,” said Panico, Head of the Rheumatology Department at Summit.
Lifestyle still has an influence
Even though genetics plays an important role, lifestyle is still a factor that can worsen or trigger gout attacks.
Excess body weight, a diet high in purine, and excessive alcohol consumption have been proven to increase uric acid levels in the blood.
According to the Arthritis Foundation, excess fat in the stomach area can trigger inflammation which worsens gout symptoms. Therefore, maintaining ideal body weight and managing diet are important steps, especially for those who have a family history of this disease.
“By managing food intake and maintaining body weight, the risk of gout attacks can be reduced, even for those who are genetically more susceptible,” explained Panico.
Hereditary factors can indeed make a person more susceptible to gout, but that does not mean this disease cannot be prevented.By adjusting your diet, maintaining an ideal body weight, and limiting alcohol, the risk of attacks can be minimized.
“Genes cannot be changed, but lifestyle can,” Panico emphasized.”Knowing your family history is the first step to protecting yourself from future gout attacks.”
