Report from the United Nations (UN) which crowned
Jakarta
as the most densely populated city in the world received a strong objection from the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung.
According to Pramono, the UN data is inaccurate. He said that Jakarta was actually far below first place in terms of population density.
“So in my opinion, if it is said that Jakarta is the most densely populated city, it is wrong. Because Jakarta is actually number 30 in density,” said Pramono, quoted from

Pramono explained that the density of 42 million people was due to regional concentration, which made it seem as if Jakarta was beating other big cities such as Tokyo and New Delhi.
Nevertheless, he chose to use the UN report as a benchmark and reference for the Jakarta Government to maximize development and improvement of the city.
For information, the United Nations through the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs places Jakarta in first position as the city with the highest population and density in the world.Jakarta is followed by the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, in second place with a population of 40 million people.
Previously, Tokyo, the capital of Japan, was ranked first in a row. However, in this year’s report, Tokyo managed to drop to third place with a population of 33 million people.
The UN notes that population growth is driven by urbanization patterns, where around 45 percent of the world’s total population of 8.2 billion people now live in cities.
The number of cities with a population of more than 10 million people has increased rapidly from eight cities in 1975 to 33 cities in 2025, with 19 of them in the Asian region.
The UN report also predicts that Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will become the next high-density city.
Head of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Li Junhua, emphasized that urbanization is both a strength and a great opportunity if managed with the right strategy.
“If designed inclusively and coordinated, cities can open up new opportunities for climate action, economic growth and social equity,” he said.
