The latest survey from
Time Out
involving more than 18,000 residents
city
around the world reveals which cities drain the wallet the most based on the cost of daily activities.
In general, the cost of living is higher in big cities, especially for rent and housing costs.However, this survey specifically focuses on the costs of everyday activities: eating at a restaurant, seeing a movie, drinking coffee, visiting an art gallery, seeing theater or comedy, seeing live music, drinking at a bar, and going out at night (
night out
).
Based on the percentage of respondents who answered ‘cheap or free’ and ‘affordable’, the data was crunched to produce a ranking of the cheapest and most expensive cities to live in, according to the people who actually live there.

Seoul Named the Most Expensive City
With the lowest overall affordability score, Seoul in South Korea emerged as the most expensive city on the list.
Only 30 percent of respondents in South Korea’s capital said eating at restaurants was affordable;21 percent said the same for activities

, and 27 percent said drinking in cheap bars.
On the list of other expensive cities is Oslo in Norway.Norway’s capital is notoriously expensive for eating out.Data
Time Out
supports that, with Oslo receiving the lowest affordability score for dining in restaurants among all cities surveyed, with only 24 percent of locals considering it affordable.
Cities that are known to be expensive such as London, Sydney and Los Angeles are also on the list.London was named the most expensive place to go for a night out, with only 16 percent finding it affordable.
However, the British capital is actually one of the cheapest cities to see art, with 83 percent of Londoners saying art and culture in their city is cheap or free.
As a methodological note, survey
Time Out
it focuses on the costs of activities in the city and does not include affordability of housing, rent, and groceries.
