This injury usually occurs due to twisting movements or sudden turns during exercise, but can also occur due to minor injuries when standing or getting up from a sitting position.
This injury has several typical signs, including:
• Pain or stinging in the knee
• Knee stiffness or swelling, which may appear hours to days after the injury
• Difficulty bending, straightening, or moving the knee
• Knees feel ‘not strong’ until they feel like they will collapse when standing
• There is a ‘clicking’ or ‘creaking’ sound sensation when moving the knee
Symptoms of a meniscus tear can also resemble a sprain so they are often misunderstood.
