Foreign Tourists Buying Sex Services in Japan Potentially Subject to Sanctions

is seriously considering implementing sanctions or fines for men who purchase sexual services in Sakura Country.
This step was taken by the country’s government after international media recently labeled Japan as a “new sex tourism destination”.
This issue was raised by independent member of parliament, Rintaro Ogata, in the Lower House Budget Committee session on November 11.

According to newspaper reports

, Ogata directly asked Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to consider punishment for sex service customers.
Responding to the request, Prime Minister Takaichi said he had asked Justice Minister Hiroshi Hiraguchi to review how existing laws treat buyers of sex and consider new regulations targeting the purchase of sexual services.
Overhaul of the 1956 Anti-Prostitution Law
Currently, the Anti-Prostitution Law enacted in 1956 only punishes women who peddle sexual services, but does not punish men who pay for those services.
Concerns about Japan’s international image are growing.Lawmaker Shioumura Fumika highlighted foreign reports describing Japan as a “new sex tourism country”.

Particular concerns are growing about foreign tourists running prostitution rackets for Japanese women in Tokyo, especially in the Kabukicho district, according to reports

It should be noted that under existing Japanese law, prostitution is prohibited but not fully criminalized.The decision to review penalties for sex buyers comes amid a surge in tourism.
Japan welcomed 31.65 million foreign visitors between January and September, up 17.7 percent year-on-year.The figure marks the fastest pace for Japan to surpass 30 million foreign arrivals, driven by a weak yen exchange rate, increased flight connections and more relaxed visa policies.
