IPB University biomedical expert Benedikta Diah Saraswati said that plastic spatulas have the potential to experience thermal degradation when exposed to heat.

“Chemical bonds in polymers can break down and release dangerous compounds into food,” he said in a broadcast on the official website

Dangerous compounds that may appear include
bisphenol A
(CPA),
phthalates
, formaldehyde, or aromatic amines.
BPA, for example, he continued, can interfere with the work of the body’s hormones, including the hormone estrogen.
“Long-term [BPA] exposure can trigger fertility problems, insulin resistance, fetal development problems, and even the risk of cancer,” he said.
Diah also highlighted the use of plastic spatulas which were starting to melt.This condition will release residual monomers which are neurotoxic and carcinogenic which can trigger cancer.
The hot friction of a plastic spatula can also release microplastic particles which can be swallowed with food.
“These particles can penetrate the intestinal wall, enter the bloodstream, and settle in body tissues,” he explained.
The conditions above can trigger oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, which ultimately causes cell damage, immune disorders, and even metabolic syndrome.
Instead of choosing a plastic spatula, Diah suggests trying silicone or wooden ones.
“Pure silicone does not trigger oxidative stress or hormonal disorders, so it is safe to use in the long term,” said Diah.
But, be careful with cheap silicone spatulas.The reason is, it could be that the silicone material used has been mixed with plastic material.
“If the silicone changes color, is too cheap, or has a strong chemical smell, it most likely contains a mixture of plastic,” said Diah.
