Emirates airline is starting to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to improve prediction accuracy
turbulence
or shocks during its flight.
This step comes amid experts’ concerns that climate change is making severe turbulence more frequent.
Turbulence is caused by eddies of “rough air” that can cause the plane to heave or sway from side to side.

Thousands of planes experience severe turbulence every year, costing each airline up to £1.5 million, due to aircraft damage and delays.
Emirates, an airline based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, says its new technology provides ”
real-time data
” which identifies areas of turbulence on the flight path for their pilots.
This approach is claimed to have helped reduce aircraft’s unexpected encounters with severe bad weather while in the air.
Airlines typically use weather reports and radar to predict turbulent areas while a plane is in the air.
However, Emirates claims its new method, which uses “machine learning (
machine-learning
), turbulence data sourced from many aircraft (
crowd-sourced
), and pilot reports”, will improve prediction accuracy.
Emirates will provide “live and in-situ turbulence visualization” in the cockpit, allowing the crew to anticipate turbulence and prepare the cabin accordingly.
“We recognize that turbulence remains an ongoing challenge that cannot be eliminated completely, but we are committed to doing everything possible to minimize unexpected encounters with severe turbulence,” said Emirates Flight Operations Division Senior Vice President, Captain Hassan Alhammadi, as reported

He added that while Emirates cannot promise turbulence-free flights, the airline’s new strategy has contributed to a “significant reduction” in unexpected incidents of severe turbulence over the past year.”helping make travel safer and more comfortable for our customers,” he said.
