1. Hot food
Storing hot or freshly cooked food in plastic containers is not a good idea. The reason is, when heated, plastic can decompose and release substances such as BPA (bisphenol A) or phthalates into food. Both are known to interfere with natural hormone function.
Instead, store hot food in glass or stainless steel containers. If there isn’t any, then let the food cool first before storing it in a plastic container.
2. Tomato sauce or other sour foods
Don’t store spaghetti
bolognese
in a plastic container. In addition to leaving stubborn stains, tomato-based sauces can damage plastic containers over time.
Not only that, acids from food can also cause plastic to release dangerous chemicals or microplastics. The same goes for other acidic products such as oranges.
3. Onions
There’s a reason why allium-containing onions are generally packaged in mesh bags, rather than tightly sealed containers.
Onions are cured or dried for several weeks to extend their shelf life.Storing them in tightly closed containers such as plastic will trap moisture that promotes rot.
To prevent mold and other signs of spoilage, store onions in a cool, dark, dry place.
4. Green vegetables
In meal prep, many people store green vegetables in plastic containers with the aim of making them last longer. In fact, tightly closed plastic containers can make vegetables rot quickly.
Try wrapping vegetables in clean tissue and storing them in a tightly closed container to keep them fresh longer. This method helps absorb excess moisture that can make vegetables wilt.
5. Fresh herbs
Plastic bags are not ideal containers for storing fresh spices or herbs. This method will make them slowly slimy.
Treat fresh herbs such as chives or celery like fresh flowers.
Fill a glass or jar with a little water.Cut the stems to 1.25 centimeters (cm) and place the herbs in a jar.Cover the top with a loose plastic bag to prevent it from wilting. Then store it in the refrigerator.
