Children are often said to need optimal nutrition from nutritious foods and drinks, including
milk
.However, some parents are now looking at raw milk or
raw milk
, which is claimed to be more ‘natural’ and healthier than pasteurized milk.
Is that true?
Clinical nutrition specialist Johannes Chandrawinata actually said the opposite.According to him, raw milk is not safe for children to consume. In fact, not only is it not superior, but it is much riskier.

“Raw milk is not good for consumption because it has many health risks. There are no more benefits from raw milk compared to pasteurized milk,” said Johannes when contacted by goldensamoyedIndonesia.com, Wednesday (19/11).
In fact, he said, the claim that raw milk contains probiotics also needs to be reviewed.Because it could be that the bacteria in it are not only probiotics, but also bacteria that are actually dangerous for the body.
“Perhaps raw milk contains several types of bacteria, but not necessarily the types of bacteria that are probiotics with beneficial health effects,” he said. The presence of bacteria in raw milk can actually be a sign of animal or human waste contamination.
Some parents may believe raw milk is safe if it comes from healthy animals or clean farms. In fact, according to Johannes, contamination can still occur, and even the best hygiene practices cannot guarantee that raw milk is free from dangerous microorganisms.
What is certain, he said, is that raw milk is not recommended for children.Because there are no additional benefits, while the risks are much greater.
“To ensure the safety and health of your little one, choose milk that has gone through a pasteurization process, which has been proven to be effective in killing pathogens without reducing its nutritional value,” he said.
Risk of serious illness
Without going through a heating process (pasteurization), raw milk has the potential to carry various dangerous microorganisms such as:
• Salmonella
• E. coli
• Listeria
• Campylobacter
• Brucella
Johannes said these germs can trigger food poisoning with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache and fever.
“In severe cases, complications can develop into kidney failure, paralysis due to Guillain-Barré syndrome, and even death,” he said.
On that occasion, Johannes also detailed several groups most vulnerable to consuming raw milk, namely:
• babies and children,
• elderly,
• pregnant women,
• people with weakened immune systems such as transplant recipients.
“Because a child’s immune system is not as strong as an adult’s, even a small amount of exposure to dangerous bacteria can lead to serious illness,” he said.
