When in
plane
, especially when sitting near the window, passengers are at risk of exposure to the dangers of ultraviolet radiation and even skin cancer.
The reason is none other than because airplane windows do not completely block UVA rays which can trigger skin inflammation.
Even more dangerous, airplane windows are also unable to block UVB rays and this can cause skin cancer.UVB and UVA rays can contribute to skin cancer, damage collagen, and trigger premature wrinkles.

“Airplane windows do not completely block UVA rays, which are rays that penetrate glass and accelerate aging. Plus, at an altitude of 30,000 feet, UV exposure increases due to the thinner atmosphere, so SPF is very important on flights,” explained a certified dermatologist, Marnie Nussbaum, as reported

.
Especially at certain heights, radiation exposure more than doubles.Nussbaum added that this could be excluded only if all the plane window curtains were closed throughout the journey.
Especially for travelers who are fanatical about window seats, exposure to UV rays is greater compared to seats in the middle of the aisle because they are closer to the exposure.
“At higher altitudes, a thinner atmosphere and proximity to the ozone layer mean greater UV exposure,” explains Nussbaum.
The more frequently you fly, the higher the risk of skin damage due to exposure to UV rays.It is not uncommon for pilots and cabin crew to experience melanoma because of this.
Therefore, he emphasized the importance of using sunscreen when flying to protect yourself from ultraviolet radiation.According to Nussbaum, self-protection from the sun must be a daily habit that is always remembered.
“Applying a daily serum rich in antioxidants and a mineral-based SPF is essential for protection and prevention,” she says.
In addition, the air in the cabin is usually drier with humidity levels below 20 percent. It is important to choose the right sunscreen to protect yourself from UV rays and avoid dehydration.
It is recommended to choose a sunscreen made from cream rather than gel, with a formula containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin or ceramide.
Drinking enough water is also an important measure to ensure the body stays hydrated.Adequate water and skin care are Nussbaum’s tips for avoiding the risk of radiation and dehydration.
“Drink lots of water, apply moisturizing serum and sunscreen cream before boarding. Usually in the middle of the flight, I like to spray a soothing hydrator such as hypochlorous acid and aloe vera. Don’t forget lip serum,” explained Nussbaum.
