Andrology Specialist at Eka Hospital Grand Family PIK, Christian Christoper Sunnu, explained that Covid-19 is similar to mumps or also known as mumps, in terms of its impact on the male reproductive organs.
“Mumps is an infection of the salivary glands, but the virus can spread to the testicles. The effect is inflammation of the testicles, usually patients complain of pain, heat and pain on one side. If left untreated, the testicles can shrink and sperm production is disrupted,” said Christian at a media meeting with Eka Hospital in Jakarta, Tuesday (16/12).
According to him, Covid-19 also shows the same pattern.A number of studies have found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can spread to the testicles, both in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
In fact, continued Christian, the entry point for the virus is through the respiratory tract. However, the impact can spread to various organs, including the testicles.
“There is even the latest research in 2024, patients who have recovered from Covid-19 still experience a decrease in sperm count. In cases of long Covid, the effects can be more severe, ranging from decreased hormones, erectile problems, to decreased sperm quality,” he said.
Excess sugar and weakening of male sperm
Apart from infection, diet also plays a big role in sperm health.Excessive consumption of sweet foods and sugar is said to worsen male reproductive conditions, especially if it leads to diabetes.
“Sugar is actually needed by the body. But the problem is when the amount is excessive and not stored in the muscles. Sugar will circulate in the blood vessels and act as a free radical,” explained Christian.
These free radicals can damage small blood vessels. The impacts vary, from blood flow disorders to erectile dysfunction. If blood flow to the testicles is disrupted, the nutrients needed for sperm production also decrease.
“That’s why diabetes patients often find a decrease in sperm quality and quantity. In the long term, the testicles can experience decreased function,” he said.
However, he emphasized that this condition is not always permanent.By controlling blood sugar, lifestyle changes, and appropriate therapy, the chance of having children remains.
