Li Jiang (not his real name) has been struggling to lose weight for a long time.This man from Xinxiang, Henan Province had difficulty controlling his eating habits until his weight reached 134 kg.

According to his older brother, the younger sibling started dating and the relationship was going well.Li and his girlfriend were preparing to meet each other’s parents.
In order to develop a better and healthier impression, Li decided to undergo gastric bypass surgery.
“Everything was going well, so he wanted to lose weight before meeting his parents. He did it because he was preparing for the wedding,” said Li’s brother as quoted by

Gastric bypass surgery is a type of bariatric surgery that allows the stomach to only accommodate a small amount of food so that weight is lost.Bariatric surgery is only applied to people who have difficulty losing weight either through exercise or strict diets, as well as people who are obese.
On September 30, 2025, Li was admitted to the Ninth People’s Hospital, Zhengzhou for a procedure.The operation was successfully completed on 2 October 2025 and he was transferred to the ICU for post-operative care before going to the general ward the following day.
However, on October 4, 2025, Li’s condition suddenly worsened.He was found to have stopped breathing, and was rushed back to the ICU.Unfortunately, Li died on October 5 2025 due to respiratory failure.
From medical records, Li reported progressive weight gain accompanied by snoring during sleep over the past year.He was also hospitalized with a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.Pun Li has hypertension and fatty liver (

Meanwhile, the family questioned the suitability of Li’s condition before surgery and the handling of post-operative complications.
According to Jimu News, the hospital has reviewed and confirmed that the patient has met clear clinical indications for surgery.They also said that when the patient’s condition worsened, the team immediately responded.
On October 10, 2025, the hospital and family entrusted the local Health Commission to conduct an autopsy and determine the cause of death.
“The final autopsy report will be the most authoritative basis for determining the cause of death,” the hospital said.
The news of Li’s death also drew a response from Chinese netizens.
“There is always a risk of death with this kind of surgery. Doctors can do their best, but there are no guarantees,” said one netizen.
“Gastric sleeve surgery is still surgery, and it carries risks. If you can lose weight naturally, do it,” wrote another.
