continues to show a downward trend.The latest data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) records a significant slowdown, both on a monthly and annual basis.
In a report released Wednesday (17/12), JNTO noted that Chinese tourist visits to Japan in November 2025 were still relatively large, but the growth rate continued to slow.Throughout that month, the number of Chinese tourists reached 562,600 people, growing only 3 percent annually compared to the same period the previous year.

This figure is much lower than the 111 percent jump year on year (yoy) recorded in November 2024.
“Even though there has been a reduction in flights due to political tensions, airline seat capacity is still higher compared to the same period last year,” wrote the JNTO report, as quoted from the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Saturday (20/12).
The decline is also seen on a monthly basis.In September 2025, the number of Chinese tourists traveling to Japan will still reach 775,500 people.This figure fell to 715,700 people in October 2025, before finally dropping sharply to 562,600 people in November 2025.
A similar trend was experienced by tourists from Hong Kong.JNTO recorded that only 207,600 Hong Kong tourists visited Japan in November 2025. This number fell 8.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
“The decrease in the number of Hong Kong tourists is mainly due to the reduction in available aircraft seat capacity,” explained JNTO.
The decline in the number of tourists from China and Hong Kong cannot be separated from the heating up of political relations between Beijing and Tokyo.Tensions were sparked by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s statement regarding Taiwan.
He said the possibility of an armed attack on Taiwan could become a basis for Japan to deploy troops within the framework of collective defense.
The statement drew strong criticism from China.Beijing asked Takaichi to withdraw his remarks, but the request was rejected.The conflict continued to drag on and became increasingly heated.
This situation has a direct impact on the tourism sector.The Chinese government even issued an advisory banning travel to Japan as tensions between the two countries increased.
