Worms
still a problem
health
What often happens to children, especially those who are in school age.Data shows that nearly 80 percent of worms are found in groups
child
age 5-10 years.
“Why? Because they [children] actively play on the ground, actively playing outside. Their education about clean and healthy living behavior is not optimal, so the most school-age children [intestinal worms],” said a member of the Idai Tropical Disease Coordination Work Unit (UKK), Riyadi who also practices at Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung in Webinar held by Idai, Friday (22/8).
The second group most often infected is pre-school children, namely age 2-5 years.Riyadi said, at this time, children had begun to walk, interact with the environment, and unconsciously touched the ground or dirty objects that could be a medium for the spread of worm eggs.
“If there are children aged 2-5 years who see the ground, think there is a new toy. They hold it, even though there could be worm eggs,” said Riyadi.
The type of worm that most often infects is the bracelet worm (
Ascaris Lumbricoides
).These parasites like warm and moist areas, and can even survive in the human body for up to 2 years.
“If it is big, his life can be in the small intestine. The maleworm can be up to 30 centimeters (cm). And he can live for up to 2 years,” Riyadi explained.
One female bracelet worm is capable of producing around 200 thousand eggs every day.If not treated immediately, infection can cause a buildup of large amounts of worms.
“If there are worms that are not treated, he defecates carelessly. One child alone can have worms up to 1-2 kg,” said Riyadi.
Never lift 3 kg of worms from the children’s stomach
Riyadi tells of his experience handling a child patient with a case of severe pieces at Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung. The patient comes with complaints of constipation and prolonged abdominal pain.
“We once got a case at Hasan Sadikin Hospital, got a worm up to 3 kilograms (kg). After surgery, the conditions are good,” he said.
After the worm is released through a surgical procedure and given a drug to kill the remaining larvae, the child’s condition gradually improves.
“Patients have been constipated for a long time, abdominal pain. Worms are released, taking worm medicine, healthy,” Riyadi added.
Furthermore, Riyadi said worm infection was not always easily recognized. While still in the form of larvae, worms can trigger coughs similar to lung infections, but not tuberculosis.
If it is an adult and lives in the digestive tract, the symptoms can be in the form of:
– Nausea and decreased appetite,
– Difficult to defecate because the worm clogs the intestine,
– Stomach aches repeatedly,
– Difficult body weight,
– Risk of stunting if chronic infection.
“If he [worm] lives in the digestive tract, usually [symptoms] are rarely severe. Frequent nausea, lack of appetite, difficult to defecate. If it is chronic, it can be stunted,” Riyadi said.
In addition, worms that accumulate can migrate to other organs such as appendicitis, bile ducts, even out through the anus, nose, or mouth.
“It must be remembered, the discharge of worms from the body does not indicate the ferocious worm.
