Head of BPOM RI Taruna Ikrar said the findings were evidence of the widespread illegal processing of food being marketed without meeting applicable safety requirements.
“Products that were promoted as food, even claimed to increase virility, turned out after being examined to contain sildenafil citrate,” said Taruna, as reported by
detikhealth
.
Sildenafil citrate itself is known as a drug to treat erectile disorders.Consumption can only be done based on a doctor’s prescription and under medical supervision.
If consumed excessively without clear measurements, sildenafil citrate can cause kidney failure and even heart failure.
“The effects can cause serious health problems, ranging from kidney failure, heart failure, and even death,” he said.
The absence of dosage standards for these illegal products means that consumers have no way to measure safe limits for consumption.This could have fatal consequences.
